The V belt and cone pulley is fine for the vertical setup, but too fast for horizontal use in most cases. If you are going to be doing horizontal work with endmills or running in aluminum, the Benchmaster might be OK, but for plain milling cutters in steel, it's just too fast to be of any real use.

I have the complete setup also, but since I also have a "real" horizontal mill, I have never used it. It probably "works", but I don't like the Benchmaster setup for horizontal. The spindle goes in the "ram clamps", and a fairly light, thin casting clamps on the spindle housing between the clamps to hold the overarm. Does not seem very stiff.

I still love my first mill, the Benchmaster, had it thirty plus years but I haven't used it since I got the 1 mill. ... The great advantage to a horizontal mill is rigidity and power, so you can get through with a slotting job, facing job, or cutoff faster. The Sherline conversion really isn't going to achieve that goal.

The Benchmaster is a good little horizontal mill, but it is little. The vertcal head for these is rather limited IIRC. You can convert any of the smaller horizontal mills to a high speed verical head like the Rusnok. (1/4hp, "Y" collets up to 1/2", 280 4800 rpm, and " of quill travel.)
